Oasi della Garzaia
After the factory was abandoned the garden became a true and proper wood with locust trees, poplars, elderberries and plum trees. Several species of heron have settled here, finding in this refuge the food and resources to let them nest. Among the hidden branches in the abandoned garden the herons, which arrive with stunning punctuality each year at the beginning of March, have built hundreds of large nests. They remain here until the cold Autumn weather starts to set in when they migrate to warm African lands. The first census was taken in 1981 and the experts immediately saw that the "Garzaia" of Codigoro was one of the largest, most significative colonies of herons in northern Italy; its 500 nests of night heron, little egrets and squacco heron prompted the Provincial Administration of Ferrara o set up of a wildlife reserve right away.
