Devolution Room

Devolution Room
The Ceiling, 19th century, represents the Devolving of Ferrara, or rather its passing from Estense domination to that of the Pope in 1598. The four pictures are to be read clockwise: in the first one, Lucrezia d’Este is conversing with Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini, the Pope’s nephew. In the second, Duke Cesare d’Este, surrounded by dignitaries, leaves the city. On the third, Cardinal Aldobrandini arrives in Ferrara. In the fourth one of the many festivities organised in honour of Pope Clement VIII.
