Portomaggiore

The name of this town, like that of the nearby Portorotta and Portoverarra, reflects the fact that navigable courses of water once flowed through these areas. Its strategic position in the heart of a dense network of waterways lent importance to the town, which as far back as the 15th century already had more than one thousand inhabitants. Unfortunately, very little remains of the rich history of Portomaggiore, though traces lie underground and are sometimes discovered both accidentally and through scientifically conducted diggings. The center was severely damaged during the 2nd World War.
