De Pisis - La poesia dell'attimo

Due to the restoration works at Palazzo Massari and the temporary closing of the museums hosted in the Palace, the “Fondazione Ferrara Arte” and the Modern Art Galleries of Ferrara have organized an exhibition to show back to the public the art of Filippo de Pisis. At the Contemporary Art Pavillion, a rich selection of his works will be on display until June.

After the researches held on the Raimondi Archive, stored at Bologna University, this exhibition will show a selection of letters, postcards and texts sent by Filippo de Pisis to his friend Giuseppe Raimondi from the 1920 to 1950.
De Pisis’ ability to express the soul of nature, objects people and places – especially Ferrara, his beloved metaphysical city – is deeply linked to literature, which was the favourite way to filter reality during his youth. There is a deep link between painting and literature: exemplary is his Still life with kingfisher, where the theme of memory is portrayed; while in Socrate’s onions the painter reconsiders his personal relation with De Chirico’s Metaphisic.
In his maturity, De Pisis feels the urgency to translate into paintings his emotions about the subject of representation. So, he produces urban landscapes as La Coupole (1928), or extremely original still lives. Many works of art are built in the tranquillity of his atelier, and filled up with great lyricism. (The gladiolus; The hare)
Two sections are on display: the first one is about ephebic beauty, expressed in paintings and drawings in a sort of diary; the second one is a dialogue between some still lives produced by De Pisis and some rare examples of still life produced by Giovanni Boldini, as a symbolic passage between two very different ways of painting.
De Pisis’ activity ends with the pale and sad paintings he made at the Clinic of Villa Fiorita: Rose in the bottle (1950), Pears (1953), in the very melancholic dimension of the last part of his life.
