In the Comacchio lagoons, the countryside acquires an unreal beauty. The bilancione (framed nets typical of the region) rise over the water, and break for a moment the dominant horizontal panorama. The area is frequented by spoonbills, flamingoes, ducks and the stilt-plover, as well as those inescapable gulls. The departure point for boat trips is near the Casone Foce, to the south of Comacchio.
In recent years, an important project for ecological renewal and habitat conservation has been developed at the Salina (saltworks) of Comacchio, bordering the lagoons to the northeast. There are visitor trails which can be followed with a guide.
